Marvel's Wolverine Launches on PS5 to a Divided Critical Reception

Marvel's Wolverine, Insomniac Games' newest project, launches this Tuesday, September 15, as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Players take on the role of Logan in a narrative-driven, third-person action adventure that is not open-world, and the game carries a mature rating due to its more explicit violence.

The story follows the mutant as he confronts Bolivar Trask's mutant-abduction agenda, with Jean Grey playing a central role in the plot. Logan is voiced by Liam McIntyre. The title is available in a standard edition for $69.99 and a digital deluxe edition for $79.99, with the game file weighing in at roughly 79 GB.

With the review embargo now lifted, the critical consensus has settled around a Metacritic score of 78, based on more than one hundred reviews. That figure trails the studio's previous outings: Marvel's Spider-Man reached 87, while Marvel's Spider-Man 2 hit 90.

Critics have singled out combat as the game's strongest element, praising its fast, brutal pace reminiscent of action titles like Ninja Gaiden. The core loop revolves around staggering enemies through parries or environmental throws, opening windows for heavy combo attacks and building a rage meter that unlocks special abilities.

On the other hand, several outlets noted that the roughly 15-hour campaign suffers from repetitive combat encounters and limited level design variety. IGN and GameSpot both awarded the game a 6, describing it as a more barebones third-person action experience than fans expected from Insomniac.

Even so, character performances and visual presentation were consistently praised across reviews, keeping Marvel's Wolverine among the most talked-about console releases of the week.
