Diablo V announced at BlizzCon 2026, targeting a 2029 release

Blizzard Entertainment officially confirmed that Diablo V is in development during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, held in Anaheim, California. The announcement came alongside a dark teaser trailer and a targeted release window of spring 2029, though specific platforms have not yet been detailed by the studio.

Unlike previous entries in the franchise, which put players in a race to stop an impending catastrophe, Diablo V starts from a bleaker premise: the story unfolds roughly a century after the events of Diablo IV, in a Sanctuary where the Lord of Terror has already triumphed. Entire civilizations have collapsed, heavenly armies have been defeated, and Mephisto is said to have returned to prowl the shattered world.

According to Blizzard, the central question driving the new game is what a hero must become once the world has already fallen. Material shared so far includes concept art depicting ruined gothic cathedrals and devastated landscapes, underscoring the even heavier tone the development team intends to explore in this new era of the series, which marks three decades since its debut in 2026.

The Diablo V reveal wasn't the only headline at BlizzCon 2026. The show also brought news for other Blizzard franchises, including World of Warcraft: The Last Titan, slated for 2027 as the culmination of more than two decades of the MMO's storytelling, alongside World of Warcraft: Forever, a third experience within the Warcraft universe set to launch this November. Blizzard additionally unveiled an original open-world shooter set in the StarCraft universe, targeting a 2030 debut.

For Diablo fans, Blizzard opened sign-ups for future updates on the project through a dedicated website, signaling that details about gameplay, classes and mechanics will be revealed gradually over the coming months. No gameplay footage has been shown publicly so far.

With Diablo IV's commercial success and a solidified player base built up over the past few years, anticipation around Diablo V is running high within the community. Confirmation that the next title will move away from the series' traditional structure — flipping the usual balance of victory between good and evil — has already sparked discussion among fans about how this setup might reshape progression systems and storytelling in future games set in Sanctuary.
